Steeped in History • Legendary Roots

Steeped in History & Legend for Nearly Five Centuries

Dating back to 1530, The George & Dragon is celebrated as one of the city’s oldest public houses, steeped in history and legend.

Nestled on Castle Street beside the beautiful River Avon, our Grade II listed building seamlessly blends authentic heritage with genuine Wiltshire hospitality.

Over the centuries, our pub has seen many transformations. Originally built in the early 16th century, The George & Dragon once served as a lively coaching inn for weary travelers making their way along the historic road into Salisbury.

Folklore, Intrigue & Character

The Infamous “Silent Woman” & Tales of the Past

In its earlier years, our tavern was known locally as the infamous “Silent Woman.”

Tales from our past — from a legendary house of ill repute to stories of intrigue, smugglers, and Salisbury folklore — have shaped the unique, colourful atmosphere you’ll find here today. Every oak beam, cosy corner, and river-facing window echoes with the laughter, secrets, and stories of travelers from centuries past.

We take immense pride in our rich history, welcoming atmosphere, and timeless setting. When you step through our doors, you are not just walking into a pub — you are becoming part of living history.

“Tales from our past — from legendary house of ill repute to stories of intrigue & folklore — have shaped the unique atmosphere you’ll find here today.”
